Founded in 2009 by Bruce Martin, Paul Raemer, and Shelly Raemer, the Chatfield High School Mountain Bike Team has grown from a handful of riders to over 50 boys and girls competing in Division 1 of the Colorado High School Cycling League. Our team is open to everyone—from beginners just discovering the joy of mountain biking to seasoned racers chasing victory at every event.
Ready to experience the thrill of mountain biking and the camaraderie of our amazing team?
Join the Chatty MTB family and see what you’re capable of!
Our team is more than just a racing squad. We’re a community where every rider—regardless of experience—feels supported, challenged, and welcomed.
Here’s what makes the Chatfield MTB Team special:
Our incredible coaches and parent volunteers bring a wealth of experience and passion to help every rider succeed. From race-day strategy to life skills, they’re committed to building riders’ confidence and abilities.
We organize practices by skill level to ensure every rider finds a group where they belong. Whether it’s practicing on local singletrack or tackling technical enduro challenges, every practice is designed to be fun, safe, and rewarding.
Riders can choose how they engage with the sport—some ride recreationally to build fitness and enjoy the outdoors, while others compete for state championship titles. No matter the goal, there’s a place for everyone on the Chatfield MTB Team.
Our team embraces a spirit of inclusivity—cheering each other on and celebrating personal progress at every race. We emphasize sportsmanship, teamwork, and the importance of building friendships on and off the trail.
Competing from August to October, our athletes race alongside 2,000 other high school riders across Colorado, Southern Wyoming, and Northern New Mexico. The season ends with the State Championships, where top riders and teams battle for the crown.
With the support of families and sponsors, we create an environment where riders thrive. From pre-race dinners to post-race celebrations, the Chatfield MTB team truly feels like a second family.
At the heart of our program is the belief that every rider can thrive—whether they ride recreationally or aim for the top step of the podium.
We focus on building life skills, fostering teamwork, and promoting healthy habits through the joy of mountain biking.
With grit, fun, and spirit, the Chatfield MTB Team rides as one—creating memories, friendships, and life lessons along the way.
Matt loves biking. It transports him from a land of duty and responsibility to a land of freedom where he gets to enjoy the fresh air and the challenge. He likes the burn of the up hill and the reward of the whooping and hollering on the way down. He by no means is the fastest or most skilled among our coaches but he loves it just the same. He is our Head Coach and loves sharing the joy he gets with the kids who ride for the team. He heard about the High School league through some great friends and when his oldest son Brooks started the team, he joined to. His favorite parts are the silly moments between the rides, seeing kids grow in confidence over the course of the season.
Matt is taller than Alex!
Alex started coaching in 2013 when he co-founded a New Hampshire non-profit called Seacoast VeloKids. He taught elementary school kids mountain bike basics and also coached middle school race teams during the summer. Alex became a coach with Chatfield Senior High in 2017 when his son joined the team. He was the head coach from 2021 to 2023 and currently serves as the Team Manager. When Alex is not on the local trails coaching the Chatfield students, he enjoys enduro and technical riding with his friends. He also occasionally likes to suffer through 50 mile races such as the Firecracker 50 and the Vermont 50.
Scott started riding mountain bikes in the 80’s and has since become a lifelong MTB rider. He has competed in the 24 hours of E-Rock, 12 hours of Mesa Verde, and several Highlands Ranch series races. He began coaching when his oldest son Carter started racing as a freshman and continued with his other son Colton who started a year later. Fast forward 9 years, and he is still showing his enthusiasm for the sport and the team today! “I love being outside, on my bike, and exposing kids to the lifelong sport of mountain biking. Every year I see breakthrough moments for kids who are just starting in the sport and learning the thrill and fun of this breathtaking sport”
Naomi Ducharme has coached with Chatfield MTB for the last 6 years. She is also a teacher at Chatfield. Her favorite part of coaching is seeing them at school and having some of them in class! In college, Naomi played D1 soccer at the University of Akron in Ohio. She played all four years and was named captain for three of them. She was also named to the all-MAC team her senior year. After college she started running and has completed several marathons and a trail 50k. After several injuries, she picked up biking 9 years ago. She decided she liked biking so much that last summer she rode the whole Colorado Trail: from Durango to Waterton Canyon. It took 8 days and 20 hours!
Naomi has been married to her husband, Dustin, for 20 years. They have 2 daughters, neither of whom like to ride bikes. Her oldest daughter is a freshman at Chatfield and her youngest is currently in 7th grade.
Chris Schroeder has been an integral part of the Chatfield Mountain Bike Team since he started coaching in 2019. With a deep-seated passion for the sport, Chris has been riding mountain bikes seriously since 2006. His racing portfolio includes notable competitions such as the 24 Hours of Moab, 24 Hours in the Old Pueblo (Tucson, AZ), Tour of the White Mountains (50-mile race in AZ), Grand Junction 40 Mile Off Road, and the Highlands Ranch Race Series.
I have been riding my whole life and used to race as a kid. I have a Yeti SB5 that I ride as often as I can. My favorite trail is Rutabaga because it's relatively close and a fun downhill only trail. This is my first year coaching and it has been a blast watching the kids progress throughout the season.
I grew up in a cycling family, so much so that my parent's wedding picture has a bike in between them. My bike endeavors started at the age of 13 racing mountain bikes. I also raced track, it's the bikes that have no breaks. I broke the national record in the individual pursuit. Joined the national team and raced in two Panamerican games winning a silver medal in the team pursuit.
After high school I received a cycling scholarship from Midwestern State University in Texas. There I won our conference road race championships two years in a row and won team overall at Nationals. I tried my legs in Spain in the amateur circuit, it's the guys trying to turn pro. I had multiple top 5 placements and won Cataluñas under 23 road race. I placed top 20 in the GC of a stage race that was won by a guy who went on to win the Tour de France. Now, I take pride in eating the dust behind our kid's wheels.
I ride a Specialized S-Works hardtail.
This is my first season coaching and I'm having an absolute blast. The energy and enthusiasm these kids bring to practice and races are contagious. It keeps me young and I hope I can pass on some things I've learned. Primarily that biking gives us friends and good memories.
This is my first year coaching for the Chatfield Mountain Biking team. One of the coaches, Mike Leblanc, has been trying to get me to coach for years; but it was just never the right time. I love working with kids-I have been over at Front Range Christian School for the last 6 years and I have volunteered for Copper Mountain in the kids ski program for about 25 years. With over 30 years of mountain biking trails, stories and falls under my belt, coaching is the perfect outlet for my passion for kids and bikes. All of my girlfriends quit biking a long time ago, so I love encouraging the girls on the team and watching them excel.
Bikes: Spot Ryve, and Framed Fat Bike. My quote: Point and Pray.
I have been riding bikes since I was about 3. I started competing in BMX racing around the age of 9. If I was not riding my BMX, I was either at school or sleeping!
I got a mountain bike for my birthday when I was an early teenager and have ridden mountain bikes ever since.
I am in my 3rd year as a level 2 coach with Chatfield Mountain bike team. I am also a cycling merit badge counselor for a local Scout Troop.
I currently ride either a Specialized Turbo Kenevo SL or an IBIS Ripmo 2.
Being from London, one thing I enjoy about mountain biking in Colorado is being outside in the beautiful mountains and glorious weather. In addition to being outside and riding my bike, being a coach gives me the opportunity to meet new people and pass on my biking knowledge and experience to younger riders. Watching riders overcome a challenge with skills that I have helped them gain is the most enjoyable part for me.
I began mountain biking ten years ago when I joined the Dakota Ridge team in high school. I continued riding and improving while at Colorado State University in college, where I rode both cross-country and downhill. Now, in my first year as a coach for the Chatfield team, I’m thrilled to share my biking knowledge and learn more about coaching. It’s incredibly rewarding to watch the students significantly improve their speed throughout the season, driven by the collective advice from all the coaches.
I am from the boonies of New Jersey. Yet, I often went to The City (New York City). For middle and high school, I attended Hun School. While in high school, I ran cross country, wrestled, played lacrosse, and worked as an auto mechanic. I also started to get into mountain biking. Upon high school graduation, I attended Vassar College where I majored in English, minored in education, and played lacrosse. I was a starter for four years and a two-time captain. After graduating from Vassar, I stayed in Upstate New York to student teach and be the second assistant lacrosse coach for Vassar. However, I heard a call to move out west. Thus, in 2007, I came to Denver and got a teaching job at Rock Canyon High School. I was also hired as the head varsity lacrosse coach. In 2009, I left teaching to pursue my master's in Sport and Performance Psychology from the University of Denver. At that time, I remained the head lacrosse coach at Rock Canyon. Upon graduating from DU, I returned to RC as an English teacher and still remained the head lacrosse coach. I was the coach at RC through the 2016 season. And after the 2016/2017 school year, I left Rock Canyon. My partner and I have been together since 2003; we met in college. We're happily married, have an awesome dog, son, and daughter.
Since arriving in Colorado, I’ve gotten more into mountain biking, and now I seek out riding whenever I can. In 2017, I became an English teacher at Chatfield. I'm also one of the faculty sponsors of the CSH Mountain Bike Team. I'm extremely excited to be here.
Joe and his wife Kate have three amazing children who have all raced on the Chatfield Mountain Bike Team, which is how he got involved in 2015. Joe's first big ride was when as a kid, his family biked 470 miles, carrying gear and camping on the Blue Ridge Parkway. He still has his first mountain bike, a 1991 Specialized Stump jumper, but doesn't put many miles on it. Joe has raced the Leadville Trail 100, The Dirty Kanza (now Unbound) and cyclocross for several seasons. He also rides his fat bike in the winter and bikepacks when he can get away. His favorite part of coaching is pushing kids up Mt. Falcon for the few weeks of the season before they get stronger and faster and leave him behind on the way up the hill as well as on the way down.
This is Shaun Giebel's first year coaching with Chatfield High School, but has been coaching various youth sports for many years. The last 5 years he has been coaching mountain biking with Avout Racing where his junior athletes have obtained dozens of podiums including a few state and national championships. He enjoys passing on the skills he has gained over 20+ years of riding and working with riders to build a lifelong passion for the sport.
Nathan's passion for mountain biking began over 30 years ago when his dad bought him a chromoly Trek 850. A Colorado native, he’s raced the Firecracker 50 and Crooked Gravel and has ridden iconic trails like Whistler's A-Line and Vancouver's North Shore. In addition to tackling gnarly descents, Nathan’s favorite rides start at 5:00 am so he can catch the sunrise on the climb. He loves the outdoors and helping young riders grow in both skill and mindset to make mountain biking a life-long activity.
His coaching philosophy? “Mountain biking is 80% mental... and the other 20% is in your head."
